Programs in counseling and psychology at Temple University are offered within the College of Education. Available degrees in psychology and counseling include a Counseling Psychology MEd, a Military Counseling Graduate Certificate, a Ph.D. in School Psychology, and a School Psychology EdS. The university also offers a psychology major for undergraduate students.
Many of the programs offered by the university also feature concentrations, which allow students to focus their efforts in a specific area of counseling or psychology. For example, the Counseling Psychology Med program helps students become certified, as well as offers concentrations in School Counseling and Mental Health Counseling.
High school students without any experience in college will choose the Bachelor of Arts in Psychology to begin their journey toward becoming a counselor or psychologist. The undergraduate program’s facilitators encourage students to become part of the Psychology Majors Association, as well as the honor societies for students in psychology programs. Those honor societies include Phi Beta Kappa and Psi Chi.
Requirements of the undergraduate program include completion of at least 123 credits, including 90 credits in counseling and psychology. At least 45 of the total credits earned toward the degree must come from upper-level classes. In the program, students will take professional development courses, study a foreign language, and take a variety of general education electives. Psychology courses include Careers in Psychology, Critical Thinking in Psychology, and Introduction to Psychology.
Students who already have a bachelor’s degree will choose from one of the many graduate programs in counseling and psychology, which may lead to certification and opportunities for careers in group, school, or individual counseling. Programs are offered by different colleges within the university. For example, the Counseling Psychology MEd program is offered by the College of Education, while the Military Counseling Graduate Certificate is offered by the School of Social Work.
Students can expect to spend two years earning their MEd if they enroll on a full-time basis or three years if they enroll in the program as a part-time student. Students will earn their degrees on-campus for counseling and psychology at Temple University, but there are some classes available to undergraduate and graduate students through Temple Online that award continuing education credits.
About Temple University
Temple University was founded in 1888 as the Temple College of Philadelphia by a minister of the Baptist Church named Russell Conwell. In addition to acting as a minister at the local Grace Baptist Church, Conwell also tutored adult students in the evenings. His efforts eventually led to a more organized effort at providing education. The university got its name from the first place its classes were held, which was in the basement of the Baptist Temple.
Today, the large school has more than 40,000 students enrolled with an academic staff of more than 3,700 and an administrative staff of more than 4,500. The university’s official colors are white and cherry, and students who participate in sports do so within The American conference of NCAA Division I games. The school’s mascot is Hooter T. Owl, and the school also has a live owl mascot named Stella. The university’s main campus is about a mile and a half north of Center City and covers 110 acres.
Temple University Accreditation Details
Regional and institutional accreditation for Temple University comes from the Middle States Commission on Higher Education. The last periodic review from Temple University occurred in 2015, and the university will undertake reaccreditation in 2020. Many of the programs, degrees, departments, and schools within the university are programmatically accredited by independent organizations.
The program in law is accredited by the American Bar Association, Council of the Section of Legal Education and Admission. The nursing programs are accredited by the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing. The American Psychological Association, Commission on Accreditation has accredited the Ph.D. and doctoral programs in clinical psychology. Also accredited are the programs in counseling psychology and school psychology.
Temple University Application Requirements
Applying to Temple University begins with the submission of the Temple Application or the Common Application. Students will then use the university’s self-report high school transcript tool to submit their grades from high school. During the application process, students will be automatically considered for scholarships and don’t need to submit any separate paperwork to qualify for the $100 million in annual scholarships dispersed each year.
The university recommends that students apply during the fall of their senior year. The school accepts applications on rolling admissions, as well as students who want to gain acceptance through early action. Early action acceptance means applying by November 1st. In addition to a self-reported transcript, students should also submit their SAT or ACT scores. Students can also apply without standardized test scores under certain conditions.
Tuition and Financial Aid
Temple University is a public college and charges different rates for in-state versus out-of-state tuition. Individual programs also charge unique tuition rates. For example, degrees offered by the Boyer College of Music cost $9,276 per semester for Pennsylvania residents and $16,298 for out-of-state residents. Students enrolled in programs offered by the College of Education pay $8,040 if they’re a Pennsylvania resident or $14,596 if they’re not.
Graduate programs at Temple University are also charged based on what program a student enters. Programs in the College of Engineering cost $1,135 per credit for Pennsylvania residents or $1,490 for non-residents. Programs in the College of Education are $942 per credit for in-state residents and $1,297 for non-residents. Students will also pay a University Services Fee each semester based on the number of credits enrolled. The fee ranges from $163 to $445 per semester.
Students interested in applying for financial aid will contact the Student Financial Services Department for information on qualifying. Students should complete their FAFSA form no later than October 1st and will check online with Temple University’s official website for details on status and financial aid awards. Eligible students may receive a combination of grants, loans, scholarships, and Work-Study awards based on financial need and academic achievement.
Some of the scholarships a student may qualify for include Air Force ROTC scholarships, Army ROTC scholarships, and various athletic scholarships. Some students may also qualify for the Bill Bernardo Scholarship in Physical Education, the Broad Street Finish Line Scholarship, or the Coca-Cola First Generation Scholarship Program. Students may also want to research outside scholarships and grant opportunities for assistance in paying for tuition at Temple University.
